2026 QiDu Session 5 Class Passcode: JingXin (静心)
Welcome to Session 5 of our QiDu Class. Before we begin, let's open the door with our passcode, and understand what it carries.
静 (Jìng) means still, calm, quiet. But not the silence of an empty room. It is the stillness of deep water while the surface is calm, and yet full of life beneath.
心 (Xīn) means heart-mind. In Chinese, there is no separation between the heart that feels and the mind that thinks. They are one. So Xīn is your whole inner world. It is your thoughts, emotions, and awareness all together.
Together, JingXin (静心) means "calming the heart-mind", to settling the inner noise so that a deeper clarity can emerge.
Why We Need a Different Word Than "Calm"
English has words like calm, quiet, or peaceful. But JingXin is not quite any of them.
Calm often describes something that happens to you, like the weather calms, the sea calms. It's a state you find yourself in.
JingXin is something you do, it is an active, intentional practice of settling the heart-mind. It is not the absence of thoughts or feelings. It is the return to a still center, again and again, no matter what is moving around you.
Think of a lake. Wind stirs the surface into ripples. You don't stop the wind. You simply let the water settle, and then you can see all the way to the bottom. That is JingXin.
The Relationship Between FangSong and JingXin
Last time, I had explained FangSong (放松); the intentional release of tension in the body.
Now we add JingXin (静心); the intentional settling of the heart-mind.
They work together:
· FangSong softens the body.
· JingXin quiets the mind.
· Together, they create the conditions for Qi to flow naturally and for Shen (spirit) to become clear.
You cannot force the mind to be still any more than you can force the body to be loose. Both require the same gentle, ongoing noticing, and the same willingness to return, moment after moment, without judgment.
What JingXin Is Not
· It is not emptying the mind. Thoughts will come. That's fine.
· It is not suppression. You don't push feelings away.
· It is not sleepiness or dullness. JingXin is bright and awake.
· It is not a one-time achievement. It is a continuous returning.
JingXin is simply this: noticing that the mind has wandered, and gently coming back, again and again, with kindness.
A Final Thought
Every time you type JingXin as today's password, let it be a small reminder:
"I am here to settle my heart-mind—not by forcing it quiet, but by gently returning to stillness, again and again."
That is the practice. That is the art. And that is the doorway we now walk through together.
